Social Work Program Admissions Information

• Successful completion of Introduction to Social Welfare (SOWK 170) with a grade of B or better.
• Successful completion of Human Service Ethics and Experiences (SOWK 172) and the required hours of volunteer work at a human service agency with a satisfactory evaluation from the agency.
• A cumulative bet36365体育 grade point average of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale for all course work completed at the time of application to the major.
• Transcripts of transfer students will be evaluated on a case by case basis

Social work majors and minors should understand and embrace the goals and values of social work summarized in the preamble to the NASW Code of Ethics.

“The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession's focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living.

Social workers promote social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. "Clients" is used inclusively to refer to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social workers are sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to end discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other forms of social injustice. These activities may be in the form of direct practice, community organizing, supervision, consultation , administration, advocacy, social and political action, policy development and implementation, education, and research and evaluation. Social workers seek to enhance the capacity of people to address their own needs. Social workers also seek to promote the responsiveness of organizations, communities, and other social institutions to individuals' needs and social problems.

The mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values. These core values, embraced by social workers throughout the profession's history, are the foundation of social work's unique purpose and perspective: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. This constellation of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession. Core values, and the principles that flow from them, must be balanced within the context and complexity of the human experience.”

The application will be reviewed by the student's advisor who will make recommendations to the Admissions Advancement and Retention Committee Chair.

• Students will complete a formal application and submit all application materials online through Canvas by May 1 or December 1.
  When all the criteria have been met, the application will be submitted to the advisor. (Students who are ready in their academic program to take practice classes are required to submit completed applications to their advisors as soon as possible.)
• Social work advisors will review the application.
• When the advisor approves that all criteria for admission are met, they will forward the application packet with their recommendation to the Committee Chair.
• The Chair will review the application materials and the student will be informed of admission status by the Chair.
• Students who are denied admittance to the program will be informed of the decision along with justification. The student will have the option of appealing this decision.
• Appeals must be filed within 10 days of the receipt of the denial.
• All students need to be advised that failure to maintain the required 2.5 GPA will lead to suspension.
• The Admissions Committee Chair reviews all applications where concerns were expressed by the student's advisor who reviewed the application and forwards those applications for discussion at the Admissions Committee where a final determination will be made.

• All students must maintain the required 2.5 GPA in order to be admitted and to enroll in social work practice courses and field placement.

• All required social work courses must have a grade of C or better. A grade of C- will not be acceptable.
• Students are permitted to repeat required SOWK courses with C- or below only one time.
• Students are permitted to repeat only two required SOWK courses.
• Students must successfully complete SOWK 480, 481 and 482, the Field Practicum courses, the first time they are taken.
• If admission has been revoked due to violation of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, students must wait two semesters, excluding summer, before reapplying.

• Students who leave the Social Work Program and/or bet36365体育 for more than two years will have to reapply for admission to the Social Work Program and must be accepted prior to resuming their social work course work.
